About Me

Ella Carey - Owner & Head Behaviourist

I have been working with dogs in a professional capacity across various canine sectors for the last 15 years. Hounds & Co. has been my passion for the last 8 of those.

My experience has taught me that it is best not to spot-treat behaviours but to step back and look at the whole picture. I am detail obsessed and look at all factors of each individual dogs life, from diet, genetics, breed, fulfilment, health, routine, environment and lifestyle.

Each dog is treated on a case by case basis and subsequently we do not tie ourselves to one method or ideology.

While I enjoy helping owners overcome all kinds of behavioural challenges, I have a particular passion for recall, predation and off-lead reliability. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing an owner confidently let their dog off lead, knowing they have the trust, communication and control to enjoy that freedom together.

I am based in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk with my two Rhodesian Ridgebacks Gussy and Nev,  and my less-doggy-mad but incredibly patient Husband, Will.

My Qualifications

- Degree in Animal Sciences from Harper Adams University

- Over 15 years of hands-on experience with dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages.

- First-aid trained

- IOA accredited training qualifications in:

- Dog Behaviour & Training

- Dog Socialisation & Obedience

Kim

Kim has been with us for many years after initially starting off as a client with her ex-reactive Beagle, Daisy. Kim is now an experienced Hounds & Co. Trainer and Packwalker covering the Colchester area. Kim has 4 fully off-lead trained dogs, 3 Beagles and a Deaf American Bulldog and regularly takes part in Barn Hunt Trials. You can find her @houndsandco_kim

What are we good at?

Recall and Predation Specialists

We specialise in...

- Recall that is reliable. Your dog will leave us being able to come away from; food, fuss, other dogs, wildlife, livestock, runners, cyclists and other distractions in the environment.

- Predation. We understand that accidents happen with dogs and wildlife and sometimes even livestock. We can fix this dangerous and upsetting behavioural problem sensitively and without judgement.

- Heelwork. Pulling on the lead is not only incredibly frustrating, it's also physically detrimental to your dog, as well as you the owner. All dogs leave us with an on and off-lead heel.

Gundog Training. We seeing love breeds doing what they were meant to do. From starting from scratch or problem solving, we'd love to help.

Other anti-social behavioural issues and much, much more! From reactivity, OCD and to separation anxiety. There's not much we've not seen at this point but we do love surprises!

Packwalks

We are incredibly proud of our Packwalk programme. Our oldest and most popular service.

Packwalks are far more than just a dog walk. We provide safe, structured fulfilment that will leave your dog tired, happy and won't undo any of your training. We can promise that there is zero chaos but still plenty of fun!

The Hounds & Co. Packwalk Curriculum includes (but is not limited to):

- Confidence building

- Gundog Training

- Impulse control

- Whistle work

- Walking to heel off lead

- Group recall

- Walking to heel on lead

- Balanced and well matched play

- Swimming

- Individual recall to their own name in a group

- Ignoring distractions

- Manners

- Improving social skills

Covering Earls Colne, Colne Engaine, White Colne, Wakes Colne, Chappel, Great Tey, Stoke-by-Nayland, Nayland, Wissington, and Colchester.

Please note; in order to protect the integrity of our walks and the investment made by our dog owners, all dogs on packwalks MUST already have a high level of obedience and must pass a trial walk in order to be accepted. Training prior to joining may be required.

Happy Dogs. Happier Owners.

Testimonials from some of my wonderful clients.

Ella is a lovely, personable, highly qualified dog trainer who makes herself accessible for questions and comments about the dogs. She has dealt with a number of anxiety and lead frustration issues with our Labradoodle whilst giving him his all important pack walks - all part of the service!

Our new puppy is undergoing a board and train with Ella and when we go on holiday we don't leave them with anyone else!! I'm so please we found Ella romping across the fields and signed Wally up! The best decision we ever made for the dogs - Highly recommend
